The first steps towards building our house

This is going to be a blog regarding the building of our new home! I will try an squeeze all the facts that we have right now into one initial blog post and then as the weeks and months move on I will post our new pictures, news and anything else that may have to do even remotely with our new hobbit hole!

So at the end of March one of our couple friends moved into their new house in Calgary. It got us to thinking. We having been putting a lot off until we move to Victoria. Well, we talked about it and it really isn’t going to be feasible for a very long time. So we figured, why should we be putting off our lives for something that may not happen for another 10 years!! So we looked at our finances and with mortgage rates the way they are right now, we can sell our place, pay off all of our debts, and get a new (bigger) mortgage and still come out with more money than we have right now! So we decided to look at the same building company and area as our buddies. We found a really nice floor plan and called the guys for an appointment. Well we got a call back and they said since the area we wanted was winding down with the buildings, that they had nothing in our price range. We were so sad!! We figured that this would be the answer from any of the builders in the area, so we decided to look elsewhere. We looked at the new community in the North East, which would have been ok as it was a lot closer to my work, but it was in the area of the airport. So we decided that we would try and get excited about the new area, and made an appointment to see someone a few days later. A few hours after this happened, we get a call from the builder who told us no. He said he had some exciting news and we HAD to call him back right away. So we did, and low and behold he told us that he holds back lots for people who have been referred to them. I guess he had called our friend and asked about us! So he had a lot available, but we had to build a certain floor plan that would be in our budget. We decided to look at the one we had to build. We were kinda feeling sick as we thought the floor plan would blow as we had our hearts set on a 1100 square foot one. But we looked at it and OMG, it was wayyyy better than the one we were looking at! It has a garage and it is 1359 square feet! We were so excited, we were going to get a lot in the area we wanted with a house that we never thought we would be able to afford! But this guy wasn’t done yet! He said that they have a promo on right now, so we could get the gourmet kitchen package (better appliances and granite counter tops!!) and total hardwood on the main level!!! No carpet on the main floor period!! Yay! So meanwhile this is sounding too good to be true. So we made an appointment with him for the next day.

We met him and we went over everything, and it was all so awesome, he is the nicest guy! He is going to keep us in budget so we don’t have to worry about spending too much. Then he showed us the lot he had for us. It is so amazing. It is a pie shaped lot, so we get more back yard for our dollar, plus it backs onto a residential street so the back yard already has a back fence. Our view from the back of our house is spectacular. It is all farm land! He told us that the people who own the land can’t afford to sell it, so it will be like that for a very long time. When we were there, there were horses everywhere! Plus about a two minute walk from our place you reach a pond that has ducks in it! Squee! So we took all the info that the guy gave us and took some photos and went home to discuss everything. Well we decided fate had handed all this to us, we weren’t going to give it away. So the next Monday we put our down payment on it! This had all happened within a week!!! It went so quickly!

So details as of now. We are changing our master bathroom to a tiled shower with a bench instead of a bath, and leaving the bath in the second bathroom. We are getting bigger windows on the back of the house since the view is so gorgeous. 45 inch is standard and we are upping them all to 60 inch! We have already picked our exterior colours. We are doing something called Cypress for all the siding (kinda a light green), then something called Cactus (darker green) for all the trim. We are having a black railing, a very subtle brown shingle, and something called Appalachian Ledge for our stone work (skinny stones with some green hues). We also have picked out our garage and front door too! That is pretty much all we have done so far. We have our first 4 hour selection studio appointment at the end of May. This is when we get to shop for everything that will go in the house! Including grout colours It is literally everything that we get to choose! It will be like shopping!

We still have to sign off on the blueprints, but as soon as that happens they will start digging the hole, and if everything goes well, our possession date will be the end of November!

We are just so excited! It is going to be an amazing experience!
